Manchester City have rejected a second £120m bid for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson. City have stepped up their bid to sign the 23-year-old England midfielder, offering an initial £106m plus add-ons. If they manage to sign Anderson, it will surpass the record £105 million transfer Arsenal paid West Ham for Declan Rice in 2023.

City already rejected Forest's first offer earlier this month and Anderson's preference is for him to move to the Etihad rather than Manchester United, with personal contract terms not an issue. United, in fact, dropped out of contention, not wanting to go deeper into a price war and preferring players to join them.

City have long admired Newcastle academy graduate Anderson. The player is currently preparing for the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, but negotiations between the clubs could continue. On Wednesday he started in England's 3-0 win against Costa Rica in England's last friendly before their World Cup opener against Croatia on June 17.

Anderson was one of Nottingham Forest's star players last season as they reached the Europa League semi-finals and avoided relegation from the Premier League despite changing four managers. He arrived from Newcastle in 2024 for £35 million and made 92 appearances, scoring six goals. Bernardo Silva's departure from City at the end of his contract means the club are looking for reinforcements in midfield, with Anderson high on the list of potential targets. Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali is also considered a highly-rated player, with City reportedly also keeping an eye on him as a long-term target.
